San Diego — Tyler Wade’s electrifying dash to home plate in the 11th inning propelled the Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Marlins Monday night. Wade, inserted as a pinch-runner, scored on a wild pitch, sealing the dramatic win at Petco Park.
Manny Machado had earlier tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth. He then started the 11th as the automatic runner on second. After gavin sheets’ groundout advanced Machado to third, Wade entered the game.
With a 1-2 count, Marlins reliever Cade Gibson threw a breaking ball that bounced in the dirt. Wade seized the chance,diving headfirst into home. Gibson’s attempted tag was a fraction too late, and the ball ricocheted off his glove, giving the Padres their first extra-innings win of the season.
