Typhoon ‘KHANUN’ Approaches Korea: Potential Impact and Path Forecasted

Estimated Path of Typhoon No. 6 ‘KHANUN’: Korea Meteorological Administration

As Typhoon KHANUN approaches, concerns arise regarding its potential impact on Korea.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has reported that as of 3 am on the 28th, Typhoon KHANUN was located approximately 730 km west of Guam in the sea.

The current projected path indicates that KHANUN is moving in a north-northwest direction at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour. It currently has a central air pressure of 1,000hPa, a maximum wind speed of 18m/s, and a strong wind radius extending up to 310km.

According to forecasts, Typhoon KHANUN is expected to reach the sea around 3 am on the 31st, approximately 470 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan. Its strength is classified as ‘strong’, meaning it possesses enough power to derail a train.

Continuing its northwestern trajectory, KHANUN is projected to reach the sea around 3 am on the 2nd of next month, about 240 km southeast of Shanghai, China. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that neither inland Korea nor Jeju Island will fall within the strong wind radius.

However, it is important to note that the typhoon’s course may slightly change depending on the position of nearby barometric pressure, causing potential fluctuations in its impact on South Korea. The authorities are vigilantly monitoring the direct and indirect effects of this typhoon.

It is worth mentioning that the term ‘KHANUN’ is derived from Thailand and is also the name of a tropical fruit.

As the sixth typhoon ‘KHANUN’ occurs, attention is focused on whether it will affect Korea.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said, “As of 3 am on the 28th, Kanun occurred in the sea about 730 km west of Guam.”

Kanun is currently said to be moving from the north-northwest at a rate of 8 kilometers per hour.

The central air pressure is 1,000hPa, the maximum wind speed is 18m/s, and the strong wind radius is 310km.

Kanun is expected to reach the sea around 3:00am on the 31st, about 470 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan.

Strength is predicated as ‘strong’.

In terms of typhoon intensity classification, ‘strong’ is the power sufficient to derail a train.

As Kanun continues to move northwest, it is expected to reach the sea about 240 km southeast of Shanghai, China, around 3 am on the 2nd of next month.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that moving to China, neither inland Korea nor Jeju will be included in the strong wind radius.

However, “the course of the typhoon may change somewhat depending on the position of the nearby barometer, so the domestic impact is flexible,” he said. “We are watching the direct and indirect effects of the typhoon closely.”

Kanun is the name introduced by Thailand, and it is a type of tropical fruit.
