Hong Kong has‍ raised its highest tropical cyclone warning, the T10⁢ signal, as Typhoon Wipha intensifies its ⁤assault on the city. The⁢ observatory further warned that “hurricane force winds are affecting the southern part of the territory” due to the storm’s eyewall, urging the public to “beware of destructive winds.” Eyewitness reports from Reuters indicated the ‍presence of massive ‍waves along Hong Kong Island’s ⁢eastern coast, underscoring the severity of the typhoon’s impact.

Widespread Disruptions Across the Region

The repercussions of Typhoon Wipha have been felt far beyond⁤ Hong Kong. China’s ⁢Hainan and ⁢guangdong provinces have also been placed on high alert, according to the state news agency ⁣Xinhua. Major cities within thes provinces,including Shenzhen and ⁢Zhuhai,along with the special administrative region of‍ Macao,have ⁣cancelled or postponed all daytime flights on⁤ Sunday.

Hong Kong’s Airport⁣ authority⁢ reported that approximately 500 flights were cancelled, with an additional ⁣400 flights scheduled for later in the day. Public transport services have also been considerably affected, with trains operating on limited schedules.

In the Philippines, wipha intensified seasonal monsoon rains, leading⁤ to reports of two missing persons, according to the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management ⁤Council.The storm’s passage affected over ⁣370,000 people in the Philippines, with 43,000 individuals evacuated to emergency shelters ‍or relatives’ homes due to flooding, landslides, and strong winds. More than 400⁤ houses reportedly sustained damage‍ during the onslaught.
