Typhoon Yagi Unleashes Fury: Vietnam Reels from Devastating 50 Billion Baht Economic Blow
Typhoon Yagi Brings Devastation to Southeast Asia
Typhoon Yagi has left a trail of destruction in its wake, affecting Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand with strong winds and heavy rainfall. The resulting floods and landslides have claimed the lives of over 400 people.
Vietnam Bears the Brunt of the Storm
The storm swept through Vietnam’s heavily populated Red River Delta, a region crucial for agriculture and manufacturing. The damage to factories, infrastructure, and agricultural areas has been significant.
The Vietnamese government estimates that the economic damage from the storm will be around $1.6 billion (approximately 53 billion baht). The human toll has been severe, with 292 people reported dead, 38 missing, and over 230,000 houses destroyed. Additionally, 280,000 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged.
Myanmar Also Severely Affected
In Myanmar, the flood disaster has claimed 113 lives, with over 320,000 people displaced to makeshift camps. Sheila Matthew, a spokeswoman for the World Food Program in Myanmar, described the situation as “the worst flood in Myanmar’s history.”
The crisis has prompted Myanmar’s senior general, Min Aung Hlaing, to seek help from foreign countries, a rare move for the military government. India has offered assistance, distributing around 10 tonnes of food and essential items, including dry food, clothing, and medicine.
