LAWRENCE, Kansas – Tyran Stokes, widely considered the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class, has committed to play basketball for the University of Kansas, choosing the Jayhawks over the Kentucky Wildcats. The announcement came Tuesday evening during an appearance on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA.”
Stokes, a 6-foot-7 forward from Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington, is the consensus top recruit according to both 247Sports, and ESPN. He selected Kansas after a recruitment process that also included interest from Oregon, Louisville, and Southern California, according to the Associated Press.
Dominant High School Career
In his senior season, Stokes led Rainier Beach to a state title, averaging an impressive 31 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and four steals per game. He even recorded a remarkable 63-point performance in a game against West Seattle. His performance earned him recognition as a McDonald’s All-American, where he scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds while leading the West team to victory.

Impact on Kansas’ Recruiting Class
Stokes’ commitment significantly boosts Kansas’ 2026 recruiting class, which already includes five-star guard Taylen Kinney, four-star forward/center Davion Adkins, four-star wing Trent Perry, and four-star shooting guard Luke Barnett. According to SI.com, this secures the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the Jayhawks.
“Honestly it’s been a long process, ever since I got my first offer, I think going into high school,”

Stokes’ arrival is expected to provide a dynamic playmaking presence for Kansas next season, offering a versatile offensive threat and defensive intensity. He is also considered a potential top overall pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.
Bill Self’s Continued Success
This marks the second consecutive year that head coach Bill Self has secured the nation’s top recruit, following the commitment of Darryn Peterson a year prior. The commitment comes after a season where Kansas was eliminated in the second round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, failing to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth consecutive year.
Stokes signed a multi-year NIL deal with Nike last year, according to the Associated Press.
