(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Kyung-hee = Following the repeal of the so-called ‘Ro v Wade’ ruling that legalized abortion by the US Supreme Court, there is a possibility that existing Supreme Court rulings related to same-sex marriage and contraception will be affected.

Justice Thomas Clarence, who is conservative, said in a supplementary position to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the 24th (local time), “In the future, we must review previous cases, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”

This is a Supreme Court precedent that recognized contraception, same-sex marriage, and same-sex sex, respectively.

Justice Clarence was appointed under former President George HW Bush and served as the longest serving justice on the Supreme Court.

The so-called ‘Greeswold v Connecticut’ ruling in 1965 recognized couples’ contraceptive rights, and the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex sexual intercourse as agreed in the 2003 ‘Lawrence v Texas’ decision could not be banned.

In 2015, Obergefel v Hodges ruled that same-sex marriage was constitutionally recognized.

Progressive camps, including the Democratic Party, have been concerned early on the possibility of a general human rights retreat, including these precedents, right after Politico published a draft that overturned the ruling.

However, American media such as CNN predicted that it is too early to judge the possibility of reviewing existing precedents, as the majority of opinions stated that the ruling does not affect other rulings other than abortion.
