President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on May 14, 2026, to establish a new framework for bilateral relations, agreeing to develop a “constructive China-U.S. Relationship of strategic stability.”

The summit, which included a meeting between the two leaders lasting more than two hours, aimed to forge more cooperative ties between the world’s two largest economic powers. According to Beijing’s official English readout of the summit, the new strategic positioning will be guided by cooperation and “measured competition” with manageable differences. Chinese President Xi stated that this framework will serve as the guiding principle for the next three years and beyond.

Strategic Stability and Managed Competition

The agreement on strategic stability comes after years of friction between the United States and China regarding issues such as technology, trade, human rights, and intellectual property. The leaders expressed a desire to deepen diplomatic and economic ties, even as they navigate significant geopolitical differences.

Tianchen Xu, a senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, noted that the agreement

“It signals a period of ‘managed stability’ that will hold for some time,”

Xu added that while frictions are expected to persist, the framework provides a guardrail to prevent relations from spiraling out of control as they nearly did in 2025.

Warnings Regarding Taiwan

Despite the focus on stability, President Xi issued a warning regarding the status of Taiwan, which he identified as “the most important issue” in the bilateral relationship. According to China’s official state broadcaster, Xinhua, Xi stated that if the issue of Taiwan is handled “improperly,” the two nations could “come into conflict.”

Xi noted that if the matter is handled “properly,” bilateral relations can remain generally stable. While a White House official described the meeting as “good,” the official readout from the United States did not include any mention of Taiwan.

Energy Security and the Strait of Hormuz

The summit addressed critical energy security concerns, particularly in the context of the ongoing war with Iran. Both leaders discussed the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, agreeing that the waterway must remain open to support the free flow of energy.

President Xi expressed China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any attempts to charge a toll for its use. To reduce China’s dependence on the Strait and Middle Eastern crude, Xi expressed interest in purchasing more American oil.

The two countries also reached a consensus on regional nuclear proliferation, agreeing that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.

Economic Cooperation and Other Discussions

Beyond strategic and energy security, the meeting covered various economic and social issues. The discussions included:

  • Investments and economic cooperation
  • Increasing Chinese purchases of American farm products
  • The issue of fentanyl
