IUIU opens Engineering Faculty, Boosts Education Role in West Nile

Arua, uganda – The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) marked a significant milestone with the opening of its new Faculty of Engineering in the West Nile region. Businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia,along with Uganda’s Ambassador to Turkey,Nusurah Tiperu,and IUIU officials,commissioned the state-of-the-art facility.
vcon Construction, a Ruparelia Group subsidiary, built the faculty, which is slated to open for the 2026/2027 academic year. It features modern laboratories, lecture halls, and workshops meeting international standards. A 500-bed hostel will accommodate students from across Uganda, enhancing IUIU’s educational role.
Dr. Ruparelia emphasized the importance of education for national progress. He said the facility would empower future engineers and address development gaps in West Nile. Vcon Construction completed the project in two years.
Ambassador Tiperu highlighted the collaboration between the Ugandan government and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), which provided a $13.5 million loan for the project. She said the faculty aligns with Uganda’s vision for advancing science,technology,and regional equity.
The Faculty of Engineering, IUIU’s ninth, will offer programs in civil, electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering, meeting the contry’s demand for skilled professionals. Local leaders and IUIU officials called the project a “game-changer” for the region.
Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gygenda, IUIU’s director, said the facility would provide opportunities for students who previously had to travel long distances for quality engineering education. The university’s #BridgingCommunities initiative underscores its commitment to inclusive education.

Enrollment is set to begin next year. The faculty is expected to spur job creation, innovation, and infrastructure development in West Nile, solidifying IUIU’s reputation as a leading institution.
