Firms Face ‍Soaring Energy Costs Amid Industrial Strategy Push

⁢ ⁢ ⁣ Updated June⁣ 19, 2025

As the government prepares to launch its industrial strategy, British businesses are struggling ⁤with escalating energy bills. The strategy, the first in eight years, aims to tackle 12 complex issues, including energy⁤ prices.

A cross-party Business and Trade Committee report earlier this month pinpointed high electricity prices as a deterrent to investment, undermining the ‍global competitiveness of UK⁣ industries.

Rain Newton-Smith, head of the Confederation of British industry ‍(CBI), has described current energy costs as an “anchor on Britain’s ambition.” She ⁤has called for a “serious” governmental⁢ plan to alleviate the financial strain.

Newton-Smith proposed that⁢ the government eliminate net-zero policy costs from business energy‍ bills. Citing ⁢CBI research, she noted that UK firms pay up to ⁣four times more for energy than their counterparts⁢ in the U.S. and Canada.

Industry Minister Sarah Jones responded to an ECIU paper by stating the importance of the clean power mission. She said ⁢it would help ⁢the UK move away from‍ volatile ⁤fossil⁣ fuel⁤ markets and protect both business and household finances with clean, homegrown energy.

Jones added, ⁣”We recognize energy costs for UK industries have spiralled on the back of rising gas prices, ‍so⁤ we are bringing them closer in line with other major ⁣economies through the British industry Supercharger – saving businesses £5 ⁢billion over the⁢ next ten years.”

What’s next

The government’s forthcoming industrial strategy is expected to outline specific measures to address high energy costs‍ and support UK businesses ⁢in achieving international competitiveness.
