UK Politics Shaken: Kemi Badenoch Takes the Reins as New Conservative Party Leader
Kemi Badenoch Elected as New Conservative Party Leader
- Kemi Badenoch has been elected as the leader of the Conservative Party, following a four-month debate after former party leader Rishi Sunak announced his resignation.
- Although Mr. Badenoch has not publicly expressed his opinion on crypto assets, his party is known for its pro-crypto stance.
Kemi Badenoch was elected as the leader of the Conservative Party on the 2nd, succeeding Rishi Sunak who stepped down as party leader after Labor’s landslide victory in the recent general election. Mr. Badenoch defeated Robert Jenrick to become the party leader.
The Conservative Party has shown a friendly stance towards crypto assets in the past, proposing measures to regulate crypto assets as a financial activity and expressing a desire to make the UK a crypto hub. However, the digital asset sector was not discussed during the leadership contest.
Su Carpenter, executive director of lobby group Crypto UK, stated, “Both Mr. Badenoch and Mr. Jenrick are particularly vocal about crypto assets and innovation in technology, finance, and payments.” However, she refrained from making any claims about their stance on crypto assets.
Mr. Badenoch has not publicly expressed his opinion on crypto assets. Instead, he proposed a new integration strategy for people entering the UK during the lead-up to the results. As a Conservative MP for north-west Essex, he was the Shadow Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government, tasked with questioning and challenging the Labor government.
Mr. Badenoch held several cabinet positions during the Conservative government, including as business and trade minister. He has emphasized the importance of financial services in the economy and advocated for reducing regulatory burdens on the sector.
