The United Kingdom has reaffirmed that its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands remains unchanged following reports of a leaked Pentagon email suggesting the United States might review its position on the territory as a response to allied stances on the Iran war.

A spokesperson for 10 Downing Street stated on Friday that the Falkland Islands have “hugely voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory,” and emphasized that the UK government “has always stood behind the islanders’ right to self-determination and the fact that sovereignty rests with the UK.”

The official added that the government “could not be clearer about the UK’s position,” noting that “sovereignty rests with the UK and the islanders’ right to self-determination is paramount,” and that this stance has been “expressed previously clearly and consistently to successive US administrations.”

The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, continue to be the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina. The islanders voted almost unanimously to remain under British rule in a 2013 referendum.

According to a US official cited by Reuters, an internal Pentagon email outlined possible policy options amid frustration over some NATO allies’ perceived reluctance to grant the United States access, basing, and overflight rights for operations related to the Iran war. Among the options discussed were seeking Spain’s suspension from NATO and reviewing the US stance on Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

NATO officials have stated that the alliance treaty contains no provision for the suspension or expulsion of one of its members, noting that NATO operates by consensus. This means any such action would require unanimous agreement among all member states.

Spain, along with Italy and France, did not allow US aircraft to use its bases or airspace to attack Iran. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the US-Israeli attack on Tehran that sparked the war, calling it a breach of international law. In response to the reports, Sánchez said he was “not worried,” stating that Spain works “off official documents and government positions,” not leaked emails, and affirmed that Spain remains a reliable NATO member.

Sánchez added that Spain’s position is clear: “absolute cooperation with the allies, but always within the framework of international legality.” He emphasized that, given NATO’s consensus-based structure, a suspension is highly unlikely to proceed.
