Research from Allianz Trade indicates that the UK possesses the most structurally exposed markets to these shortages within Europe, primarily due to a heavy reliance on fuel imports.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to warn the public that flight cancellations may occur this year. According to reports from The Times, Alexander is likely to encourage citizens to consider staycations as an alternative to international travel. This follows a prompt from Sir Keir Starmer, who suggested that travelers may need to consider changing where they go on holiday.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities and Geopolitical Risks

Trade experts have identified disruptions across the Strait of Hormuz as a primary factor threatening the supply of kerosene. While some airlines suggest the UK may mitigate the worst effects by sourcing fuel from countries outside the Middle East, Allianz Trade research suggests the structural dependence on external supplies leaves the nation particularly vulnerable to supply shocks.

The vulnerability extends beyond the UK, with Germany, France, and Italy also showing significant shortfalls in their ability to meet aviation demand through domestic means. Trade experts noted that European aviation is indirectly exposed to global oil price dynamics as well as logistical risks along key supply routes, which increases the region’s dependence on external refining hubs for fuel essential to long-haul connectivity.

Impact on Airlines and Consumer Pricing

The aviation industry is already seeing operational and financial adjustments in response to these pressures. Lufthansa Group has announced the cancellation of 20,000 flights over the next six months. Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic has implemented a fuel surcharge, and British Airways has issued warnings regarding pricing adjustments for tickets.

Michael O’Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, stated that rival airlines were desperately searching for flights to cancel as the shortage looms. The most severe disruptions are projected to occur in late June and July, coinciding with the peak of summer travel demand.
