Recent weeks have seen increased diplomatic activity, including direct talks between both sides earlier this month in Istanbul, the first in over three years. While a prisoner exchange occurred and promises to maintain contact were made, no major breakthroughs were achieved in the peace talks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that his government requires Moscow to provide its peace terms in advance of further discussions, accusing the Kremlin of sabotaging potential meetings. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire to halt the loss of life.
“There must be a ceasefire to continue moving towards peace. We need to stop the killing of people,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky also discussed wiht Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the conditions under which Ukraine would participate in a future meeting in Istanbul, stressing that any further talks “cannot and should not be a waste of time.” Russia has stated it will send negotiators to Istanbul on Monday for a second round of talks, but Kyiv has not yet confirmed its attendance.
What’s next
The possibility of further negotiations remains uncertain as Ukraine seeks concrete peace terms from Russia before committing to another round of talks. The international community continues to monitor the situation, urging both sides to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
