Ukraine Launches Drone Attack on Russian Airbases in Longest-Range Operation
Ukraine’s security services executed a large-scale drone attack against Russian military airfields, reaching thousands of kilometers inside Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky called it their longest-range operation to date.
Dubbed “Spider’s Web,” the operation required months of planning and the covert transport of drones into Russia, according to Ukrainian sources. The coordinated attacks occurred on the eve of planned talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul.
While Ukraine has claimed notable damage to Russian military assets, self-reliant verification remains impractical.
According to a source within Ukraine’s SBU security service, the coordinated strikes targeted 41 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers and A-50 radar detection and command aircraft, allegedly used to bomb ukrainian cities.
Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged that a drone attack caused “several aircraft” to catch fire at bases in the Murmansk and irkutsk regions.The ministry stated that the fires were contained, there were no casualties, and suspects were apprehended.
Ukrainian security services claim the attack destroyed 34% of Russia’s strategic bombers carrying cruise missiles, inflicting $7 billion in damages.
The “Spider’s Web” operation was in advancement for over a year and a half and involved complex logistics, the Ukrainian SBU source said.Drones were reportedly smuggled into Russia and concealed within wooden structures on trucks. The roofs of these structures coudl then be opened remotely, allowing the drones to launch toward their targets.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the drones were launched “in the immediate vicinity of the airbases,” not from Ukrainian territory.
Zelensky celebrated the “brilliant” results of the operation, emphasizing its unprecedented range in the conflict.ukraine reportedly used 117 drones to reach regions far from the front lines. the Olenya and Belaya airbases, which Ukraine claims to have hit, are approximately 1,900 kilometers and 4,300 kilometers from Ukraine, respectively.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported successfully repelling other attacks in the Ivanovo and Ryazan regions, as well as in Amur, near the Chinese border.
The full impact of the attacks on Russian military capabilities remains unclear. Ukraine is currently facing near-daily air attacks that have strained its air defenses.
Russian military bloggers have described the attack as a “black day for aviation,” with one Telegram account citing “serious errors” by Russian intelligence.
Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko emphasized the symbolic importance of the attacks,notably ahead of talks with Moscow.
