Ukraine War: Russia’s Airstrikes Down F-16, Pilot Killed
LONDON – A massive russian aerial assault targeted Ukraine overnight, involving 537 drones and missiles, according to Ukrainian officials. During the defense against the attack, a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was lost, along with its pilot.
Ukraine’s air force reported that 477 drones and 60 missiles were launched at various locations across the country. The attack was described as one of the largest, if not the largest, of the war.
The intensity of the Russian strikes prompted Poland to scramble its aircraft. The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command stated that Polish and allied aircraft were activated in response to the Russian activity near its border.
“All available forces and resources” were activated, the command said, with air defense and radar reconnaissance systems placed on high alert to ensure security in bordering areas.

Later, the Polish command announced a stand-down of forces due to a reduced threat from the Russian air strikes.
According to the Ukrainian air force, air defenses successfully downed 436 drones and 38 missiles, aided by U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets.Ukrainian pilots reportedly shot down “dozens” of drones.
Among the pilots was Lt. Col. Maksym Ustimenko, who the air force said downed seven targets before his F-16 sustained damage while attempting to intercept an eighth.
The air force reported that Ustimenko directed his damaged aircraft away from residential areas before being unable to eject.
Russian strikes or debris were recorded in multiple locations, the air force said. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces downed three Ukrainian drones.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a residential building in Smila, near Cherkasy, was hit, injuring a child.
Zelenskyy announced an investigation into Ustimenko’s death, praising Ukrainian aviation for its heroic defense. “Moscow will not stop as long as it is able to deliver massive strikes,” Zelenskyy said.
The president reiterated the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, stating, “These are American systems that we are ready to buy. We count on the leadership, political will and support of the United States,Europe and all our partners.” The ongoing Ukraine war continues to escalate.
