Ukraine Endures barrage of Drone Attacks, Russia Claims Widespread Destruction

Kyiv, Ukraine – July 18, 2025 – Ukraine faced a meaningful night of drone attacks across multiple regions, wiht Russia reporting the destruction of dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles, including a substantial number targeting Moscow and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reported repelling numerous strikes, though damage and casualties were sustained in several locations.
Russian Claims of Widespread Drone Destruction
Russian authorities announced a massive overnight drone offensive, with the Ministry of Defense claiming the destruction of 73 Ukrainian drones of an aircraft type. According to their reports, 10 of these were intercepted above the Moscow region.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin of Moscow confirmed that four drones were shot down as they approached the capital. Residents in various districts, including Istra, near Zvenigorod, and Zelenograd, reported hearing explosions. Further explosions were reported in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region, with eyewitnesses suggesting air defense systems were active in an industrial zone. At least four more explosions were heard in the suburbs of Oryol.
In response to the alleged attacks, airports in Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and also those in Nizhny Novgorod and Kaluga, temporarily suspended operations. All affected airports have since resumed normal activity.
Ukrainian Air Defense Activity and Regional Impacts
Ukrainian air defense forces reported intercepting 18 drones across five locations during the night. Wreckage from downed drones also fell in two separate areas. in total,Ukraine stated that Russia launched 35 drones,with 29 identified as “Shahed” type,primarily targeting front-line areas in the east of the country. Preliminary reports indicate that 11 “shahed” drones were shot down in the north and east, with another six suppressed by electronic warfare capabilities.
Dnipropetrovsk Region Suffers Casualties
The Dnipropetrovsk region experienced direct impacts from the drone attacks. Authorities reported that a transport enterprise in the Pavlograd district was targeted, resulting in a fire that has as been extinguished. Tragically, a 52-year-old man died in the incident, and two others were injured. In a separate incident,the shock from a “Shahed” drone strike in the Dnipropetrovsk region led to the death of a train driver,with his assistant sustaining injuries,according to Ukrzaliznytsia.
Zaporizhzhia Region Reports Fatalities
In the front-line city of Stepnogorsk, a residential building was destroyed by a drone strike, claiming the life of one man, as confirmed by Zaporizhzhia regional authorities.
Kyiv Remains Undisturbed
Notably, the capital city of Kyiv experienced a peaceful night, marking the seventh consecutive day without air attacks.
