Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Strikes on Ukraine

Early Friday, Russia initiated a large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine, targeting the capital city of Kyiv and other regions. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky reported at least three fatalities and 49 injuries consequently of the strikes.
The aerial raids extended beyond Kyiv, hitting Lutsk and the Ternopil region in northwestern Ukraine. Russia’s defense ministry stated the strikes were retaliation for “terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime,” specifying that military sites were targeted in the drone attack.
According to the ministry, the armed forces launched a “massive strike with high-precision long-range air, sea and ground-based weapons, as well as attack drones” overnight. This missile strike follows warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin to then-U.S. President Donald Trump about responding to Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian airbases.
Zelensky, in a post on X, urged America, Europe, and the rest of the world to collaboratively halt the war by pressuring Russia. He alluded to Trump’s perceived reluctance to exert pressure, stating, “If someone is not applying pressure and is giving the war more time to take lives – that is complicity and accountability. We must act decisively.”
Zelensky confirmed that the confirmed deaths included employees of Ukraine’s state emergency services. He noted that the attack involved over 400 drones and more than 40 missiles, adding that the number of injured “may increase.” Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported four deaths in the capital.
Air raid alerts were activated in Kyiv, disrupting the city’s train system due to shelling damage to metro tracks. Tens of thousands of civilians sought refuge in underground shelters.Machine gun fire echoed from the city center as air defenses attempted to intercept drones targeting Kyiv.
Authorities reported that the attacks included 38 cruise missiles, the type Ukraine targeted in its recent “Spider’s Web” operation. The cities of Kharkiv, Sumy, and Luhansk were also under air raid alerts. Ternopil’s military chief, Vyacheslav Negoda, described Friday’s strike as the “moast massive air attack on our region to date.” Ternopil Mayor Igor Polishchuk reported five injuries and damage to homes, schools, and a government facility. In Lutsk, Mayor Ihor Polishchuk reported five injuries from an attack involving 15 drones and six missiles.
The Russian defense ministry claimed its air defenses downed 174 Ukrainian drones overnight in Russia and occupied Crimea. They also reported intercepting Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles over the Black Sea. This large-scale attack follows Kyiv’s recent drone strike on at least 40 Russian warplanes at four military bases.
Zelensky stated that 117 drones were used in the Spider’s Web operation by the SBU security service, hitting “34% of [Russia’s] strategic cruise missile carriers.”
Earlier this month, direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in istanbul concluded without a breakthrough.Ukrainian negotiators stated that Russia rejected an “unconditional ceasefire,” a key demand of Kyiv and its Western allies. The Russian team proposed a two- or three-day truce “in certain areas” of the front line but provided no further details.
Trump said Putin vowed to “very strongly” respond to Ukraine’s recent attack on Russian airbases during a phone call. Moscow had previously indicated that military options were ”on the table” in response to Ukraine’s attack. Last week, Trump appeared to give Putin a two-week deadline, threatening to alter the U.S. response if he believed Putin was delaying peace efforts in Ukraine.
What’s next
The international community is highly likely to respond with increased diplomatic pressure and potential sanctions against Russia. Further military actions and counter-attacks are anticipated as the conflict continues.
