President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it Kyiv’s “longest-range operation.” the attack, which reportedly destroyed $7 billion worth of Russian military aircraft, coincided with the start of a new round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, Turkiye.
According to Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari, the “simultaneous large-scale attack” on Russian planes was “launched from inside Russia.” An official from Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service told Reuters that the operation involved hiding explosive-laden drones in wooden sheds and transporting them to the airbase perimeters. They claimed at least 41 Russian warplanes where hit.

Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is sending a delegation led by Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov to the peace talks in Istanbul.Vladimir medinsky, who leads Russia’s delegation, said Moscow received Ukraine’s “version of the memorandum on a peaceful settlement,” according to TASS. Zelenskyy stated that Russia has not shared its own memorandum with Ukraine, Turkiye, or the U.S.
TASS reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio discussed “several initiatives aimed at a political solution to the Ukraine crisis,” including the Istanbul talks.
