Ukraine’s New Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha Speaks Out: What’s Next for the Nation
Ukraine Appoints New Foreign Minister Amid Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian Parliament Approves Andrij Sybiha as Successor to Dmytro Kuleba
In a significant development, the Ukrainian parliament has appointed Andrij Sybiha as the country’s new foreign minister, following the dismissal of Dmytro Kuleba. Sybiha, who previously served as Kuleba’s deputy, secured 258 votes from MPs, exceeding the required 226 votes. The appointment is seen as a strategic move to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, with Sybiha expected to garner increased support from Western nations.
Sybiha brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having worked in the international arena since 1997. Prior to his appointment as deputy foreign minister in April, he served as a deputy to Andrij Jermak’s office manager in the President’s Office from 2021. Between 2016 and 2021, Sybiha held the position of Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey. His background in international relations and law is expected to serve him well in his new capacity.
The appointment of Sybiha follows the dismissal of Kuleba, who was reportedly asked to resign due to concerns over his performance in securing new weapons. The move is part of a broader cabinet reshuffle aimed at injecting “new energy” into the government’s work. As Ukraine continues to resist Russian invasion with the support of Western nations, Sybiha’s appointment is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the country’s diplomatic efforts.
