A Ukrainian national weightlifter who enlisted as soon as the war against Russia began was eventually killed.
According to various foreign media, including the Guardian, on the 6th (local time), the Ukrainian weightlifter, Oleksandr Pielyshenko (30) died recently while fighting against the Russian forces. The Ukrainian Olympic Committee said the day before, “Pielyshenko joined the army and fought from the first day of the Russian invasion,” and added, “We received the sad news of his death.”
The Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation also posted a photo of Pielyshenko on its official Instagram that day and said, “We are very sad to inform you that the heart of the honorary master of sports of Ukraine and European champion is no longer beating,” adding, “We very grateful to his family, friends and loved ones “I’m with everyone,” he said.

Pielyshenko is a Ukrainian weightlifting legend who was twice European weightlifting champion. He also took part in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and came 4th. Unfortunately, he is the first Olympic athlete to die in this war.
Meanwhile, around 450 Ukrainian athletes are known to have died participating in the war so far. Regarding this, the Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladislav Heaskevich said, “Ukrainian athletes should live a life of developing sports, but they face a dead reality,” adding, “On the other hand, Russian athletes who support the war participating in international sports competitions. “This is crazy,” he criticized.
In fact, Russia won 71 medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics by participating over 300 athletes as part of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). It is known that the Paris Olympics, which will start on July 26, will only take part in individual events, and that around 50 athletes have already secured qualifications.
