Gaza City – hamas has welcomed a new United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.The resolution, wich was opposed by Israel and the United States, passed with overwhelming support from the international community.
“We welcome the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution (on Wednesday), supported by 158 countries, which demands a ceasefire in Gaza, allowing residents of the Strip access to essential services and humanitarian aid,” Hamas said in a statement, according to reports from AFP and Al Arabiya.
The resolution, approved on Wednesday with 158 votes in favor, nine against, and 13 abstentions, demands “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and calls for the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.” The language mirrors a draft resolution previously vetoed by the United States in the UN Security Council last month.
“Throughout this aggression,we have consistently expressed our readiness to respond to any decision or initiative leading to a ceasefire,” Hamas added in its statement.The group blames Israeli Prime Minister benjamin Netanyahu and the United States for the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
