(New York = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Ji-heon = The UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas due to the veto of Russia and China.

The Security Council held a meeting on the 22nd (local time) with the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, on the agenda and voted on a resolution proposed by the United States.

Previously, US Secretary of State Tony Blinken announced that he had submitted a resolution to the Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire related to the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

This resolution received the approval of 11 of the 15 members, but was not adopted because permanent members Russia and China exercised their veto.

For a resolution to be passed, it must receive the approval of at least nine of the 15 members of the Security Council, and none of the five permanent members – the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France – practice and veto.
