UN Steps In: Investigating the Dark Reality of Minority Violence in Bangladesh
UN Fact-Finding Team Investigates Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh
A United Nations Human Rights Watch team has arrived in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to investigate violence against minorities, including attacks on Hindu communities, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Weeks after Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus took over as chief adviser to the interim government, Hindu minorities continue to report violence against members of their community in various parts of Bangladesh.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will stay in Bangladesh for a month to investigate the incidents.
Violence Against Hindu Minorities
Hindu minority groups are trying to establish ties with the UN delegation. The organizations have reported evidence of killing, vandalism, and burning of public and private property between July 1 and August 5.
A letter has been written to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stating that there has been much killing and destruction of places of worship and residences of Hindu communities.
“After August 5, mass murders were carried out and houses and religious institutions of the minority community were destroyed by the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Awami League,” the letter states.
The Bangabandhu Foundation has requested the United Nations to investigate the entire incident and the dead with the help of their forensic and weapons experts.
Background of the Violence
Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on August 5 after a violent mob attacked her home amid raging anti-government protests. Following this, people supported by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) targeted members of their Awami League and minorities across the country.
An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office on August 8, promising to restore peace and guarantee action against those who incite violence against minorities.
UN Investigation
The UNHRC team will investigate the violence against minorities, including the attacks on Hindu communities, and will submit a report to the United Nations.
The investigation is expected to shed light on the incidents and provide recommendations to prevent such violence in the future.
