Alexander Evanoff, a 19-year-old resident of Pineville, stands accused of secretly recording a sexual encounter inside a UNC Charlotte residence hall and distributing the video via Snapchat, wbtv.com reported.
The Incident and Snapchat Distribution at UNC Charlotte
According to a police affidavit, the recording took place on Sept. 19 inside a campus dorm during what was described as consensual sexual intercourse. Investigators state that Evanoff asked the victim to face the other way, which is when she believed he began recording without her consent. Evanoff subsequently shared the footage in a group Snapchat message sent to approximately 32 Sigma Alpha Epsilon members. Two witnesses reviewed the resulting media, which displayed sexually explicit content that made the victim clearly identifiable through the recording and associated photos.
When the victim confronted Evanoff and asked if distributing the content would make him appear cool,
he allegedly apologized and acknowledged that the leak would cause her embarrassment and humiliation. Law enforcement charged Evanoff with two counts of secret peeping and disclosure of private or adult images.
University Sanctions and Bid Rescission
University administrators confirmed that Evanoff is not currently enrolled as a student at UNC Charlotte. In a public statement, the institution emphasized its strict policies regarding campus conduct. The individual who has been charged is not currently enrolled at the University. The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible. It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community,
the university stated. While federal privacy laws prevent officials from discussing specific disciplinary outcomes, the school noted that students who break the law face potential expulsion alongside criminal penalties.
Legal representation for the fraternity clarified Evanoff’s status with the organization. The Lafayette Company, a law firm representing Sigma Alpha Epsilon, stated that Evanoff was never initiated into the chapter. The individual is not a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was never initiated into the North Carolina Beta Chapter. In September 2026, the leaders of the North Carolina Beta Chapter swiftly acted after learning of the individual’s alleged conduct and rescinded his bid for initiation,
the firm stated.
Campus Support Services and Mandatory Training Programs
In response to the incident, UNC Charlotte pointed students toward existing support networks, including Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Assistance and Support Services, and the Dean of Students Office of Civil Rights and Title IX. The university also maintains preventative measures through mandatory training protocols.
The University conducts mandatory Niners Know training, which covers sexual assault, sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, and stalking. The school also provides ongoing awareness programming throughout the academic year, featuring specialized education tailored for the Greek Life community.
