The momentum continued immediately after the break. Bertil Rygaard Hansen scored 31 seconds into the second half to push the advantage to 4-1. Schelb completed his hat trick in the 50th minute, marking the first three-goal performance by a Carolina player this season. Zellefrow scored his second goal of the match in the 57th minute, and Luca Nikolai capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
Historic ACC Outing Doubles Conference Goal Total
Schelb’s three goals brought his season total to 12, leading the team by a wide margin. The offensive explosion nearly doubled Carolina’s total output from its first four conference matches combined, during which the team had scored eight goals. The seven-goal output against an ACC opponent matched a milestone last reached on Oct. 14, 2000, when the Tar Heels defeated NC State 7-1.
The victory extends Carolina’s winning streak to four consecutive matches. During that four-game stretch, the Tar Heels have outscored their opponents 15-3. Overall, UNC holds a 6-2-3 record, including a 2-1-2 mark in conference play.
Match at Pittsburgh Scheduled for Friday
The Tar Heels travel to face No. 10 Pittsburgh on Oct. 9, 2026, at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
