CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a rivalry game for the ages, No. 14 North Carolina stunned No. 4 Duke 71-68 Saturday night at the Dean Smith Center, securing a victory punctuated by a dramatic buzzer-beating three-pointer from guard Seth Trimble. The win, which ended Duke’s 10-game winning streak, was anything but straightforward, extending beyond the final horn with a chaotic court storming and concerns for player safety.

Trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Tar Heels orchestrated a remarkable comeback, fueled by a relentless defensive effort and timely scoring. The Blue Devils had built a comfortable 41-29 lead at halftime, seemingly in control after racing to an 18-5 advantage early in the game. However, North Carolina refused to yield, chipping away at the deficit throughout the second half.

With 10 seconds remaining, North Carolina found themselves down, but with possession. The game ultimately came down to a single possession, and with just 0.4 seconds on the clock, Trimble delivered a clutch three-pointer that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. The initial celebration was short-lived, however, as a review revealed time still remained on the clock.

The ensuing sequence was marred by confusion and, according to Duke coach Jon Scheyer, a degree of danger. Fans rushed the court prematurely, forcing a temporary clearing of the playing surface so Duke could attempt a final play. After successfully defending Duke’s attempt, the court was stormed again, this time for good.

Scheyer expressed serious concerns about the safety of his players and staff in the immediate aftermath of the game. “It’s hard to talk about the game when I was most concerned for the safety of our players,” he said in his postgame press conference. “I got staff members that got punched in the face. My family, pushing people away trying to not get trampled. That’s not what this game is about. … That was a scary ending.”

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham issued an apology for the court storming, acknowledging that at least one person was injured during the chaotic scenes. “Rivalry games are tremendous,” Cunningham said. “Court stormings are absolutely fabulous. It’s really tough. I feel for our event staff. When they rushed the court, a number of people got knocked over. But then we had to clear the court again. Again, I apologize to [Scheyer], his family and obviously if someone got injured, that’s really disappointing.”

The victory marked North Carolina’s first win over Duke since 2024, breaking a 364-day stretch of Duke dominance in the ACC rivalry. It also represented the Tar Heels’ largest comeback win over Duke in 25 years.

Caleb Wilson led North Carolina in scoring with 23 points, while Henri Veesaar added 13 second-half points, including a crucial three-pointer that tied the game with 1:40 remaining. Trimble finished with 16 points, cementing his status as the hero of the night.

For Duke, Cameron Boozer led the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds, but his efforts were ultimately not enough to overcome North Carolina’s late surge. Boozer missed a drive against Veesaar in the final seconds of a tie game, setting the stage for Trimble’s game-winning shot.

The dramatic finish evoked memories of past classic encounters between the two programs, drawing comparisons to Austin Rivers’ buzzer-beating three-pointer for Duke in 2012. This latest chapter, however, will be remembered not only for the thrilling conclusion but also for the unsettling scenes that followed, raising questions about security and fan behavior at high-stakes college basketball games.

This wasn’t the first time Duke has faced issues with court storming. In 2024, Duke’s Kyle Filipowski suffered a knee injury after a Wake Forest court storm following an upset victory. The incident highlighted the potential dangers associated with such celebrations and prompted calls for increased safety measures.

The win improves North Carolina’s record to 19-4 overall and 7-3 in ACC play. Duke falls to 21-2 overall and 10-1 in conference action. The Tar Heels will look to carry the momentum from this victory into their next contest, while the Blue Devils will aim to rebound from the heartbreaking loss.
