Uncovering the Hidden Threat: Doctors Crack the Code on Recurring Pneumonia in Kids
Doctors Reveal the Cause of Recurrent Pneumonia in Children
A Breakthrough in Medical Diagnosis
Recently, the medical team of Wuhan Children’s Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology made a groundbreaking discovery in the case of a 4-year-old boy who had been suffering from pneumonia of unknown cause for 3 years.
The Mysterious Case of Zeze
Zeze, a 4-year-old from Henan, had been experiencing frequent illnesses since he was 1 year old. He had been hospitalized seven or eight times for pneumonia in the past three years, but the underlying cause of his condition remained unknown. In early August this year, Zeze suffered from pneumonia again, and his local hospital contacted Wuhan Children’s Hospital for assistance.
A Team of Experts Takes on the Case
The respiratory department of Wuhan Children’s Hospital, led by Chief Physician Chen Hebin, took on Zeze’s case and focused on finding the root cause of his condition. After conducting a series of CT imaging examinations, the team discovered that Zeze’s right lower lobe of the lung had structural abnormalities. Further investigation revealed that this part of the lung was always affected by pneumonia.
The Discovery of a Foreign Body
With the help of bronchoscopic interventional diagnosis and treatment, the team found that Zeze’s left lung was normal, but the upper lobe of the right lung was affected by a foreign body. The bronchial mucosa was red, swollen, and congested, and the trachea was covered with white thick sputum. The team also discovered an unknown cord-like foreign body in the deepest part of the lungs.
The Removal of the Foreign Body
The bronchofiberscope intervention team performed a foreign body removal operation, repeatedly flushing the affected area and combining it with drug treatment. they were able to “clean” Zeze’s lungs and remove the foreign body.
The Cause of the Disease Revealed
After the operation, Zeze’s father recognized the foreign body as the burr of dogtail grass. He recalled that Zeze had accidentally stuffed dogtail grass into his mouth when he was 1 year old, accompanied by violent choking and coughing. The cause of Zeze’s condition was finally revealed: the dogtail grass had been lodged in his lungs for 3 years.
A Warning to Parents
Chief Physician Chen Hebin warned that foreign bodies such as dogtail grass can be “invisible” in X-ray, CT, and other imaging examinations, making them prone to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. He advised parents to take their children to a children’s specialist hospital for a thorough investigation if they experience repeated pneumonia in a fixed part of the lungs.
A Successful Recovery
After the foreign body was removed, Zeze’s pneumonia was quickly controlled, and he made a full recovery after 7 days of rehabilitation treatment.
