[팜뉴스=김응민 기자] Every modern person at least once experiences swelling in the limbs or body. Temporary swelling can occur due to eating salty foods, such as ramen, before going to bed, but it can also occur due to poor blood circulation in the body or as a result of surgery.

This phenomenon of swelling of the limbs or the entire body is called “edema” and there can be many factors that cause edema. It can be caused by poor eating habits or excessive stress, and can also swell when liver or heart function is reduced.

What is interesting to note is that edema can also be caused by diseases such as venous circulation disorders or lymphatic circulation disorders.

Venous circulation disorder, a common disease affecting approximately 40 to 50 percent of adults, is a disease in which blood backs up and pressure within blood vessels increases due to abnormalities in the valves that prevent blood from flowing back in the veins.

Typical symptoms of venous circulation disorders include: ▲Heavy and painful legs ▲Leg cramps ▲Vital pain when standing or sitting for a long time ▲Swelling of the legs in the evening ▲Feeling of heat or itching in the legs ▲Blue in the shape of Spider veins on the legs Appears, etc.

If venous circulation disorder is left untreated, it develops into chronic venous disease (CVD). This is a circulatory disorder that occurs primarily in the veins of the lower extremities, causing stagnant water in the veins of the lower extremities to leak into the tissues outside the blood vessels. , resulting in edema.

Another factor that causes edema is lymphatic circulation disorders. Lymph means that blood flows through the arteries into the systemic circulation and then into the arteries. At this time, interstitial fluid is generated, in which some of the body fluid remains between the cells, and this interstitial fluid escapes into the lymphatic capillaries.

Lymph is a part of the blood system other than blood vessels and is distributed throughout the body and serves as a means of transporting nutrients. It joins the venous system and supplies lymphocytes into the blood, supplying nutrients to each cell and filtering the waste produced.

However, when the lymphatic vessels are damaged, moisture containing proteins accumulates in the interstitium, causing chronic inflammation and swelling in the arms and legs, a phenomenon called lymphatic circulation disorder.

The lymphatic circulation disorder is similar to the venous circulation disorder mentioned above: △ edema of the whole body △ feeling of contraction in the arms and legs △ feeling of constriction when wearing rings, shoes, etc. △ feeling of weakness in the arms and legs △ feeling of pain or tingling, or Typical symptoms include a feeling of heaviness, redness, swelling or inflammation of the skin.

To improve these symptoms, proper exercises, stretching, and massage along with proper nutrition may be helpful. However, if you continue to have blood circulation problems, you must continue to manage them through drug treatment right from the start.

A representative product is New Vein from Daewon Pharmaceutical, which contains a flavonoid called Troxerutin as the main ingredient.

Troxerutin strengthens venous elasticity, normalizes capillary permeability and prevents and relieves valve inflammation through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It also inhibits the aggregation of blood cells and improves blood circulation by inhibiting adhesion to the internal walls of blood vessels.

In fact, according to a review document of drugs for the venous circulation published in Cochrane in 2020, troxerutin has been confirmed as effective against swelling, pain, cramps, itching, pressure, swelling and paresthesia of the lower limbs.

It also has the effect of improving edema by increasing the frequency and strength of contraction of lymphatic vessels, promoting lymphatic circulation and improving lymphatic drainage.

Notably, looking at real-world use cases, one patient who took Newvein consistently for two weeks after leg surgery received feedback from medical staff that swelling reduced more quickly and recovery was relatively good compared to other patients.

An official from Daewon Pharmaceutical said: “Newvein is an over-the-counter medicine that is effective in treating symptoms such as swelling and pain caused by venous and lymphatic circulation disorders. Adults can take one sachet daily orally and it is available in a capsule stick. that can be easily consumed “It’s a plus,” he said.

He added: “It is a liquid preparation using Daewon Pharmaceutical’s specialized liquid sachet technology, so anyone can consume it and it is absorbed into the body quickly, showing improvement in symptoms within two weeks.”
