Understanding the Body Roundness Index (BRI): A New Way to Assess Health Risks Beyond BMI

Understanding the Body Roundness Index (BRI): A New Way to Assess Health Risks Beyond BMI

November 19, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Understanding the Body Roundness Index (BRI)

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) offers a new way to assess body fat without using a scale. It calculates a score using your height and waist measurements. This method aims to provide better health insights compared to the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI).

What is BRI?

BRI assesses body shape rather than just weight. Unlike BMI, which can misclassify muscular athletes as obese, BRI focuses on fat distribution, particularly visceral fat. This type of fat, found around the organs, increases the risk of health issues like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

How to Calculate BRI

To find your BRI, enter your height and waist size into an online BRI calculator. The resulting score ranges from 1 to 16. A lower score indicates a risk of being underweight. A score between 3.5 and 7 signals a healthy weight with minimal abdominal fat. Scores above 7 indicate increased health risks related to obesity.

Health Implications of BRI

Research shows a link between high BRI scores and increased mortality risk. A study from Beijing University found that participants with the highest BRI had a 49% higher chance of dying prematurely. Additionally, a study published in 2023 revealed a connection between high BRI scores and an increased risk of bowel cancer.

Comparing BRI with BMI and Waist Measurement

BMI has been a standard for years, but it has limitations. It does not distinguish between fat and muscle, leading to potential misclassifications. A study highlighted that many athletes are considered obese by BMI standards.

Experts suggest that waist circumference is a better measure of health risks. The NHS defines high-risk waist sizes as over 37 inches (94 cm) for men and over 31.5 inches (80 cm) for women.

Final Thoughts

While BRI may offer new insights into body fat and health risks, waist circumference remains a simple and effective way to assess health. Accurate measurements can help individuals understand their health better and take necessary actions.
