Morocco Assumes Presidency of UIL Board
On December 30, 2025, Morocco’s commitment to education was further solidified with the unanimous election of Ms. Zohour Alaoui as President of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL). This appointment, made during the 21st meeting of the UIL Board of Directors in Hamburg, Germany, recognizes the Kingdom of Morocco’s dedication to promoting education as a cornerstone of peace and sustainable progress. Epsy Campbell Barr, former Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, was together elected as Vice-President of the UIL Board.
Building on Marrakech Plan for Lifelong Learning
This leadership position builds upon Morocco’s increasingly prominent role within UNESCO and the UIL. The nation notably hosted the 7th International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) in marrakech in June 2022. This pivotal conference led to the creation of the Marrakech Plan, a global framework for adult learning and education, and the establishment of the African Foundation for Lifelong Learning.
Expanding UNESCO Learning City Network in Morocco
Morocco’s dedication to accessible education at all levels is also reflected in the growing number of its cities recognized by UNESCO. During the 21st meeting of the Board of Directors, Oujda and Casablanca were added to the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. this recognition acknowledges their commitment to ensuring educational opportunities for all residents, irrespective of age. Thay join Fez, Agadir, and Essaouira, which were already part of the network since 2023.
