Restoring Public Trust in Sports and Culture: An Interview with Rep. Jeon Jae-soo
Rep. Jeon Jae-soo, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, emphasizes the need for a 21st-century sports system to restore public trust in the sports world. In an interview with Kukmin Ilbo, he discusses the current state of sports and culture in Korea and his plans to address the challenges facing these industries.
A 21st-Century Sports System
Rep. Jeon notes that the current sports system is outdated and in need of reform. He emphasizes the importance of protecting athletes’ human rights and creating a more systematic and efficient management system. To achieve this, he plans to strengthen the investigative capacity of the Sports Ethics Center and establish institutional mechanisms for effective disciplinary action.
Addressing Controversies in Sports
Regarding the controversy surrounding Ahn Se-young’s “resolve remarks” and the Korea Football Association’s coach selection process, Rep. Jeon emphasizes the importance of respecting the opinions of the parties involved. He notes that the Democratic Party’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee has already held a closed-door meeting with the Badminton Association and will wait for the results of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s investigation before proceeding.
Overcoming the Crisis in Korean Films
Rep. Jeon acknowledges the crisis facing the Korean film industry due to COVID-19 and the growth of online video services (OTT). He emphasizes the need for cooperation between the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee and the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee to address the challenges facing the film industry. He also suggests that OTT companies should contribute financially to the film industry and that the government should establish a film support system similar to those in France, Germany, and China.
Tourism Industry Recovery
Rep. Jeon notes that the tourism industry is recovering relatively smoothly from the impact of COVID-19. However, he emphasizes the need for legislative support to turn the travel balance into a surplus and to address the issue of regional concentration. He suggests that tourism content should be differentiated to match regional history and environment, and that innovative tourism policies should be explored.
Informing People about Korea Correctly
Rep. Jeon emphasizes the importance of correctly interpreting and conveying Korea’s history and value to the international community. He notes that the government’s response to issues such as incorrect historical information about the East Sea and Dokdo has been disappointing and that a process for systematically and quickly correcting information must be established.
