União Brasil issues Ultimatum to Lula Government Appointees Amidst Federal Examination
Brasilia, Brazil – In a dramatic move that underscores teh growing tensions between political factions, União Brasil has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to its affiliates holding positions within the lula Government (PT). The directive, signed by National President Antonio Rueda, demands that these individuals relinquish their posts ”under penalty of practice of party infidelity.”
The deadline, established on Thursday, comes at a especially sensitive time for Rueda, who is facing scrutiny in connection with a Federal Police (PF) investigation into the alleged infiltration of the criminal organization First Capital Command (PCC) into the financial and fuels sectors.
Currently, Celso Sabino, the Minister of Tourism, is the most prominent União Brasil affiliate within the Lula governance. His position, along with any others held by party members, is now subject to immediate review.
União Brasil has publicly expressed “unrestricted solidarity” with Rueda, denouncing the investigation as a politically motivated attack designed to undermine the party’s independence. In a statement, the party asserted that the timing of the investigation, “a few days after the official determination of Union Brazil affiliates of positions occupied in the Lula government,” reinforces the perception of a coordinated effort to tarnish Rueda’s image and weaken the party’s stance against the current government.
The PF is investigating claims that Rueda may be the hidden owner of executive jets allegedly used to transport members of organized crime, based on testimony from one of the pilots. However, the corporation has clarified that Rueda is not yet formally under investigation.
Rueda himself has dismissed the allegations as a “defamatory campaign” with a clear political agenda. “What is, yes, is a political background in these leviandades, which are being orchestrated, using a serious police operation, to attack opponents,” he stated.
This ultimatum marks an acceleration of União Brasil‘s distancing from the Lula government. On September 2, União Brasil and PP (Progressistas) had already given their affiliated ministers 30 days to leave the government, a directive that also affected Minister André Fufuca, who heads the sports portfolio and is affiliated with Progressives. The new resolution effectively anticipates the departure of União Brasil affiliates from the federal government.
since mid-August, União Brasil and PP have formed a powerful party federation, boasting a combined 108 federal deputies and 14 senators. This alliance makes them the largest bloc in the House of Representatives and the second largest in the Federal Senate. the leadership of this federation is shared by Rueda.
the coming days will be crucial in determining the impact of União Brasil’s ultimatum on the stability of the Lula government and the future of Brazilian politics. The situation is developing, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
