United States Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution for Palestine Membership

News

The United Nations Security Council voted on a resolution for Palestine to become a member, but it was rejected due to opposition from the United States.

The United States used its veto power over the decision on Palestinian membership at the Security Council meeting held from 5 pm on the 18th (local time).

For a resolution to be adopted by the Security Council, at least 9 out of 15 members of the Security Council must agree and none of the 5 permanent members – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia – exercise veto.

In the vote that day, 12 countries voted in favor, but the United States voted against the resolution, stopping the passage of the resolution. The other two countries abstained.

Originally the Security Council was due to vote on the decision for Palestine to join the United Nations on the 19th, but the timetable was moved forward and the vote was held on this day.

If the resolution had been adopted by the Security Council, Palestine could have gained membership with a two-thirds vote in the United Nations General Assembly. Also, if we were recognized as a member of the United Nations, we could get closer to establishing an independent state.

However, the United States has expressed its opposition even before the Security Council vote. Vedant Patel, senior deputy spokesman for the US State Department, said in a regular briefing that day, “We have made it clear that sustainable peace in the region,” and added, “The United States and its partners share this goal.” “Direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine with their support is the fastest way,” he said.

“We believe that this approach can advance Palestinian goals in a meaningful and lasting way,” he said. .”
