Professors at the country’s major teaching hospitals take a break once a week.

The Emergency Response Committee of Professors of the National Medical University, composed of 20 medical schools, said: “We have decided to take a break once a week to ensure 24-hour rest after duty” and explained that this it was for long-term sustainable treatment.

Professors at Seoul’s major hospitals, the so-called “Big 5”, will take leave once a week starting next week.

Professors at Seoul National University Hospital and Severance Hospital will stop providing outpatient treatment and surgery on the 30th, and professors at Asan Hospital and Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital will also stop providing outpatient treatment and surgery on the 3rd of next month .

Previously, professors at Samsung Seoul Hospital recommended taking a break “once a week” when treatment exceeds 52 hours per week.

However, each hospital has a policy of maintaining treatment for hospitalized patients, including emergency patients and seriously ill patients, even when they are closed, as recommended by the professor’s emergency committee.

Medical school professors are also moving to submit resignation letters, such as the Emergency Committee of the Catholic University College of Medicine, which has eight teaching hospitals, including Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, which is submitting resignation letters from professors retained by the principal.

Accordingly, the government’s position is: “Of the 19,000 specialists, less than 10% submitted letters of resignation and there were no cases of resignations from 88 teaching hospitals.”

“As for the class action, let me just say that we are also examining whether it violates the relevant laws.”

As medical school disruptions are expected due to successive suspensions and resignations of medical school professors, patient groups have urged the public to release the list of medical school professors who have resigned, saying it must be prepared a treatment plan.
