Unleashing the Cosmos: Astronomers Capture Breathtaking Image of ‘Black Wolf’ Nebula 5,300 Light-Years Away
[The Epoch Times, 4 novembre 2024](reports Epoch Times reporter Chen Juncun) The European Southern Observatory (ESO) recently released an image of a black nebula, which resembles a black wolf in space, and this nebula is also called the Dark Wolf Nebula.
ESO noted in a press release issued on October 31 that astronomers used the VLT Survey telescope in Chile to take photos of the Black Wolf Nebula with a resolution of up to 283 million pixels, creating a black background against the colorful background cosmic illusion.
The Black Wolf Nebula is located in the constellation Scorpius, near the center of the Milky Way, about 5,300 light-years from Earth. This image takes up an area of sky equivalent to four full moons, but is actually part of the larger Gum 55 nebula.
This dark nebula is not empty. Dark nebulae are cold clouds of cosmic dust that are dense enough to block the light of stars and other celestial bodies behind them. As their name suggests, they do not emit visible light like other nebulae.
Dust grains in dark nebulae absorb visible light, allowing only longer-wavelength radiation, such as infrared light, to pass through. Astronomers study these clouds of icy dust because they often contain new, forming stars.
This image shows in spectacular detail how a black wolf stands out against the bright clouds behind him contrasting with the bright background. Composed primarily of hydrogen gas, these colorful clouds take on a reddish hue due to the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the nova within them.
Some dark nebulae, such as the Coalsack Nebula, are visible to the naked eye and played a key role in how Native Americans interpreted the sky, but not the Black Wolf Nebula.
The VLT survey telescope is affiliated with the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics but is hosted by ESO’s Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The telescope is equipped with a camera specially designed to observe the southern sky in visible light.
