Expert Insights on the Omicron Epidemic: Dynamics and Response
Academician Zhong Nanshan, a renowned expert from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recently delivered a lecture on the dynamics and response of the new crown (Omicron) epidemic at the National University Anti-epidemic Lecture Hall.
No Obvious Difference Between Northern and Southern Strains
According to Zhong Nanshan, the prevalent strain in Guangzhou is BA.5.2, while the prevalent strain in the north, BF.7, is a mutant strain based on BA.5.2. He emphasized that there is no obvious difference between the two strains.
Characteristics of Omicron Infection
Zhong Nanshan pointed out that the incubation period of Omicron is shorter, and patients become contagious the next day after infection. Most people do not have obvious symptoms after infection, which are often mild and include dry throat, sore throat, dry cough, headache, and fever.
Importance of Prevention and Vaccination
Zhong Nanshan stressed that prevention of infection is still crucial, especially in a country with a large population base like China. He advocated for accelerating vaccination, particularly the enhanced vaccination of heterologous vaccines, and emphasized the importance of personal protection measures such as wearing masks, washing hands frequently, and ventilating frequently.
Personal Protection Suggestions
Zhong Nanshan proposed 8 personal protection suggestions to strengthen protection, including:
- Wearing masks
- Keeping distance
- Reducing public gatherings
- Frequent antigen testing at home
- Seeking medical attention if experiencing persistent fever
- Vaccination for elderly people with chronic diseases
- Avoiding stockpiling medicines
- Strict testing of “old medicines for new uses”
By following these suggestions and staying informed, individuals can take proactive steps to protect themselves and their communities from the Omicron epidemic.
