Job Title: Marketing and Communications Lead
Main Purpose of Job
This is a key role at the heart of the Japan Network, leading planning and delivery of marketing and communications campaigns linked to key strategic comms themes, including the UK’s presence at Expo 2025. As the brand leader for the Japan Network, you will ensure that global UK government branding campaigns are effectively localized for the Japan market. You will also act as the lead marketing advisor to other Japan Network departments, particularly trade and investment sector teams.
Key Responsibilities
People Management and Leadership (25%)
+ Line management of Communications Officers (up to four staff)
+ Oversight of staff’s internal/external stakeholder engagement (partners across government, private sector partners, sponsors, and outside agencies)
+ Confident engagement with senior management, providing recommendations and supporting Head of MCM; deputize for Head of MCM when required; role in Crisis Media team
Strategic Marketing Communications Campaigns and Project Management (50%)
+ Devise and deliver value-added cross-departmental campaigns for the Japan Network that deliver on key multi-year Country Plan objectives
+ Evaluate targeted, project-based communications strategies in line with the Japan Network’s regular business planning
+ Advise and work with relevant FCDO departments and Department of Business and Trade’s individual trade and investment teams to focus communications and marketing activity on areas of greatest opportunity
+ Oversee project management of marketing and communications activities
+ Apply marketing insight and deep understanding of Japanese market and trends to appropriate global HMG campaigns to targeted audiences
Brand Management (15%)
+ Responsible for adherence to FCDO and Department of Business and Trade (DBT) global brand guidelines
+ Develop Japan Network guidelines on branding when needed
+ Ensure delivery of high-impact content, including physical marketing collateral, imagery, video, and multi-media
+ Ensure cross-Japan network campaigns, events, and activities have the correct branding and are of appropriate quality and tone
Integration of HMG Priorities (10%)
+ Understanding of global HMG priorities, Department of International Trade priorities in Japan and APAC region, internal planning and monitoring tools such as OASIS model and Japan Network country business plan
+ Identify funding needs, bidding for and managing FY marketing funds and ad-hoc campaign funds (including global GREAT campaigns and project-based budgets)
+ Secure and manage private sponsorship for marketing campaigns, ensuring effective relationship management with sponsors
Resources Managed
Responsible for team of up to 4 communications staff
Budgets: marketing spend, GREAT campaign and project-based funding
Access to wider departmental budgets for travel, entertainment, and learning and development
