Monozukuri University (Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture/President: Yasuo Kokubun) will hold a special lecture by the Center for Liberal Arts on November 22, 2024 (Friday), titled “Saitama Studies: A ‘New Liberal Arts’ called Regions.” To commemorate the publication of the “University Guide to Saitama,” we will discuss “Saitama Studies,” which is an academic approach to the history, culture, and economy of the region, as a new form of education for the region.
Proposals for the future of their hometown Iwatsuki City by high school students from the Business Quest Club of Iwatsuki Commercial High School, a discussion and writing on “Saitama Studies” between Yasushi Isaka, a professor at the Liberal Arts Education Center, and Shiko Kurihara, a businessman and part-time lecturer at Keio University. We will delve deeper into the possibilities of Saitama, including an introduction to the new book “University Guide to Saitama” by the author. We look forward to your participation, whether you are interested in Saitama or not.
To commemorate the publication of the “University Guide to Saitama” (Showado), edited by the newly established Monozukuri University Liberal Arts Center from 2022, we will be holding a special lecture titled “Saitama Studies: A ‘New Liberal Arts’ called Regions”. . The lecture will be held in four parts.
In the first part, the Business Quest Club of Saitama Prefectural Iwatsuki Commercial High School will present, under the title “Creating a Small Innovation,” the “imagined future” idea of community development that can be done from the perspective of high school students in Iwatsuki City, where Iwatsuki Commercial High School is located. .
The second part features Yasushi Isaka, professor at the Liberal Arts Education Center, and businessman, part-time lecturer at Keio University/former part-time lecturer at Monozukuri University. A keynote conversation by Mr. Shiko Kurihara titled “Saitama Studies and Eiichi Shibusawa” centered on Eiichi Shibusawa, the “face of Japan” from Saitama, and Mr. Isaka and Mr. Kurihara discussed the history and future of the region from the perspective of “Saitama Studies”. We will have a discussion. We will discuss how to apply Eiichi Shibusawa’s ideas of economics and social contribution to modern Saitama.
In the third part, the authors of the new book “University Guide to Saitama,” which delves deeply into Saitama Prefecture’s famous spots, history, and culture, will introduce their respective parts. The background of his writing will be revealed, including how he portrayed the topography, industry, cultural diversity, and great people who contributed to the development of Saitama.
In the fourth part of the panel discussion, panelists included Takehiro Sawamoto (Director of the Liberal Arts Education Center, Monozukuri University), Hiroshi Doi (Professor, Liberal Arts Education Center, Monozukuri University), and Michelle Yamamoto (Visiting Professor, Monozukuri University). We will discuss the prefectural character and the future of Saitama based on the area’s “multi-living nature” and its diverse cultural background.
The first 50 participants at the venue will be able to attend, and the course will be free of charge, and it will also be possible to watch online.
