Unmissable places in Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead

He Day of the Dead is close, just less than a month before this great Mexican celebration arrives. As you know, In Mexico there are different places that celebrate it in a big way: making parades of catrines and catrinas, altars of the dead, plays and other amenities that honor the deceased saints. This date is quite special to undertake a little trip because it allows you to get to know a place from another perspective, getting closer to its culture and its own traditions.

San Andrés Mixquic

On the limits of Mexico City and the State of Mexico is San Andrés Mixquic. San Andrés Mixquic is famous for the “lighting”, a special Day of the Dead event. The cemetery is filled with candles and campasúchil flowers from October 31 until the adults leave at noon on November 2.

Chignahuapan

In Puebla is carried out Festival of Light and Life, an event that takes place in the beautiful Chignahuapan lagoon. This year there will be October 27 and 28. The show is not to be missed because in the middle of the lake, on a huge platform, a light show is held, a set, dancers and fireworks are set up.

San Marcos Island

In Aguascalientes in the San Marcos Island, the Ministry of Tourism invites the entire Mexican population to visit this corner of Mexico to find the traditional Skull Festival.

The festival takes place on this occasion in the center of the city and the traditional San Marcos Island of the October 28 to November 5. Here visitors will be able to enjoy a large number of figures made of cardboard and recycled materials, as well as cultural activities, offerings, exhibitions, music, food and parades for the whole family.

Pátzcuaro and Janitzio

It is well known that Michoacán is one of the great references in terms of celebrating the Day of the Dead. The streets of Pátzcuaro are illuminated with the fire of the candles and the characteristic yellow flowers. One of the must-sees is the “Dance of the Fishermen”, where the sacred duck is hunted with a spear and eaten so they watch over their dead in the cemeteries on the main days.
