More than 700 current and former US national security officials and retired military generals have publicly declared their support for Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.
According to the New York Times and other sources, the National Security Leadership Council for America released a letter on the 22nd, stating that only Vice President Harris possesses the temperament and values necessary to serve as the commander-in-chief for national security.
The group argued that former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, poses a significant threat to national security and America’s democratic system.
The National Security Leadership Council for America is a group of senior officials and retired generals who have served in successive US administrations, including Secretaries of State, Secretaries of Defense, and Ambassadors.
Notable signatories to the letter include Chuck Hagel, who served as Secretary of Defense under Barack Obama, and William Cohen and William Perry, who served as secretaries of defense under Bill Clinton.
Former Secretary Hagel and former Secretary Cohen are Republicans who served in Democratic administrations.
Among the military personnel are Michael Hayden, a four-star Air Force general who served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and National Security Agency (NSA) in the George W. Bush and Obama administrations.
“This election is a choice between serious leadership and vengeful impulses, between democracy and authoritarianism,” they said in the letter. “While Vice President Harris defends America’s democratic ideals, former President Donald Trump is undermining them.”
