Natsumi Tsunoda, the 32-year-old judoka from SBC Shonan Beauty Clinic, made headlines when she won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg judo category at the Paris Olympics. Recently, she appeared on TBS’s “My Life Changed! Genius Banzuke SHOW” and revealed the top 5 geniuses who changed her life, including the person who taught her the “special technique” Tomoe throw that led her to become the best in the world.
Tsunoda listed the female judo athletes she has competed against from 5th to 2nd place, but the first place was a male judo athlete - Hirotaka Kato, a former All Japan Champion who retired from active duty two years ago. Kato is currently a police officer in the Chiba Prefectural Police’s second riot squad. Tsunoda praised Kato, saying, “He’s just strong. He’s great at ground fighting, he’s good at tomoe throw, and he throws people like magic.”
Tsunoda revealed that her tomoe throw had no variations, and if it was blocked, it was over. However, Kato’s tomoe throw was different. She recalled the time when Kato performed a tomoe throw against a larger opponent in the open weight class, and she was shocked. Kato revealed that he had been taught by a “genius” and was willing to share his knowledge with Tsunoda.
Kato started teaching Tsunoda the Tomoe throw seven years ago. He said, “On the big stage of the Olympics, I really wanted to win a gold medal in tomoe throw.” Although he became number one in Japan, he was unable to participate in the Olympics, so he ”entrusted his dream” to Tsunoda. At the Paris Olympics, Kato watched the moment Tsunoda won the gold medal at the venue and cried tears of joy.
Tsunoda and Kato’s friendship and mutual respect for each other’s skills are an inspiration to many. Their story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the importance of sharing knowledge and expertise with others.
