Piero Montoro, an Industrial Engineering student at UPC and president of the Quality Management study group, participated in the plenary meeting of the ISO/TC 176 committee and its subcommittees from Oct. 12 to 16, 2026, in London, United Kingdom.
Leadership Role at International Standardization Meeting
Serving as the Convenor of the ISO/TC 176/SC 2/TG 7 Youth Leadership working group, Montoro assumed a prominent role in promoting youth leadership and the participation of new generations in international quality standardization. The National Quality Institute (INACAL) proposed his designation as Convenor. From this position, Montoro leads an effort to bring students and young professionals closer to international quality standards while generating opportunities for them to contribute to standard development. During the London plenary, Montoro opened the meeting by presenting the objectives and progress of TG 7, inviting national standards bodies to nominate young experts. He also led the review of the work plan and the definition of a new objective-oriented strategy, alongside an appearance as an invited speaker in the session titled The Young Professionals and the Future of Quality.
Structural Advancement for Youth Leadership Initiatives
A key administrative advancement approved during the London gathering involves the transition of TG 7 away from its previous dependence on subcommittee SC 2. The group will now report directly to the parent technical committee, TC 176. This structural shift elevates the working group within the broader ISO framework, strengthening its capacity to advance youth leadership initiatives. The group itself originated from the 2025 ISO plenary held at the San Isidro campus of UPC in Lima, where the Quality Management study group supported event organization and submitted a representative document on behalf of young professionals.
