Coding robots, programmable devices capable of movement, sensor reaction, and sound/light emission, are constructed using direct coding or block-based instructions.Hardware components typically include sensors, motors, speakers, LEDs, frames, batteries, and power devices. Control boards often feature Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Microbit, and ESP32.
The operational principle involves users writng and uploading code to the robot. The robot then interprets sensor data according to the programmed instructions. Based on this interpretation, output devices like motors, LEDs, and speakers are controlled, resulting in various behaviors through repeated input, processing, and output cycles.
The Environmental impact of E-Waste
Discarded small, medium, and large appliances often contain harmful chemicals, posing a important environmental threat. A substantial portion of global electronic waste ends up in developing countries, where it is dismantled or burned using inexpensive labor. This process releases large quantities of toxic gases, contaminating the surrounding habitat.
Coding Robot Contest Aims to Repurpose E-Waste
To combat this, a coding robot making contest is being proposed, utilizing discarded electronic devices collected from closed schools. According to data from the Ministry of Education as of March 1, 2023, there are 3,706 schools nationwide, including 596 unused closed schools that could serve as collection points.
the contest aims to inspire the public to repurpose broken electronics into functional coding robots. Less than 20% of the world’s electronic waste is currently recycled properly; the remainder is either reclaimed through environmentally harmful processes or incinerated. The complex structure of electronic devices contributes to high disassembly and separation costs, further exacerbated by frequent consumer replacement of electronic products.
STEAM Education and the Upcycling Coding Battle
The “upcycling coding battle” competition seeks innovative solutions rather than strict adherence to pre-written guidelines. The goal is to foster confidence and inspire future innovation. The initiative aims to
