Alexei Popyrin Stuns Fourth Seed Daniil Medvedev in Paris Masters

Alexei Popyrin (Australia) pulled off a stunning upset in the second round of the men’s tennis Rolex Paris Masters (France/Paris, indoor hard, ATP Masters) on the 30th. Popyrin defeated fourth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a thrilling match that lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Popyrin, 25, has been on a roll this season, winning his biggest title at the National Bank Open (Montreal, Canada, Hard, ATP 1000) in August. He achieved a career-high 23rd place in the world rankings after the tournament. In the same month, he also defeated Novak Djokovic (Serbia) in the third round of the US Open (USA/New York, Hard, Grand Slam).

In this tournament, Popyrin defeated Matteo Berrettini (Italy), ranked 36th in the world, in the first round and advanced to the second round. In the first set of the third round match against world No. 5 Medvedev, Popyrin allowed one break to his opponent, but he broke himself twice to take the lead.

In the second set, Popyrin was broken twice by Medvedev and was caught up by one set at a time, but in the final set he showed tenacity, saving four break points in the ninth game at 4-4. they won the tie-break and made it to the round of 16.

Popyrin’s comments on his victory were posted on the ATP’s official website. “The atmosphere was great and the crowd was great. It’s the last Masters of the year so I wanted to do well. I wanted to be in the top and this is a big step for me.”

The victorious Popyrin will face world No. 21 Karen Khachanov in the third round. Khachanov advanced to the tournament by defeating 31st place Gregoire Barrere (France), who entered as a wild card (recommended by the organizer) in the second round.
