Apple’s iOS 18.3 Enabled a Concerning AI Feature by Default

Brace yourselves, iPhone users! Apple’s latest update, iOS 18.3, has rolled out, bringing with it an unexpected default setting that’s causing a stir in the tech world. The new norm? Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI system, is now enabled by default on iPhone 16 and 15 Pro/Max models, a departure from its previous manual opt-in policy.

At first glance, Apple Intelligence seems like a dream – it streamlines tasks and offers AI-driven suggestions. But tech experts have raised red flags, warning that it comes with hefty storage demands. They predict it will gobble up around 7GB of space, regardless of your device.

So, what’s the fuss about? Critics are concerned about the Notification Summaries feature. It aggregates notifications and condenses them into simpler summaries, but it’s been known to misinterpret messages, leading to inaccurate or entirely misleading information.

While Apple has disabled the feature for news and entertainment notifications, it’s still active for other types, like messages. A real-life example? A user received a summary saying their mom had attempted suicide and then hiked in Redlands, when the actual message was about a challenging hike.

But that’s not all. Privacy concerns are also looming large. Apple Intelligence can access sensitive data stored in your apps, from banking info to text messages and health data. Apple assures users that data isn’t stored, but the feature does mine data to ‘assist’ you.

Bottom line? If you’ve downloaded iOS 18.3 but want to disable Apple Intelligence, here’s how:

  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Apple Intelligence & Siri.’
  3. Toggle off ‘Apple Intelligence.’
  4. Confirm by tapping ‘Turn Off Apple Intelligence.’

Stay informed, iPhone users! Your privacy and data storage should be your top priorities.
