The United States and Iran have entered into a Pakistani-brokered two-week ceasefire, an eleventh-hour agreement reached on April 7, 2026, to prevent further escalation and allow time for the negotiation of a comprehensive peace deal.

President Donald Trump announced the agreement via a social media post ahead of a deadline he had imposed on Tehran. The ceasefire involves a suspension of U.S. Bombing and attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the acceptance of the deal, stating the country would cease its defensive operations provided that U.S. And Israeli strikes were halted.

Conditions of the Agreement

A primary condition for the ceasefire is the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz. This critical shipping lane facilitates the transit of approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas. President Trump stated that the suspension of attacks was contingent upon Tehran ensuring the free passage of ships through the strait.

The agreement follows a 10-point proposal submitted by Iran, which President Trump described as a workable basis on which to negotiate. While the specific details of the Iranian proposal have not been fully released, reports indicate the demands include an end to attacks and sanctions.

Regional Conflict and Exclusions

The ceasefire between the U.S. And Iran does not extend to other regional conflicts. The Trump administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have clarified that the agreement does not include operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israel continued heavy bombardment in Lebanon on April 8, 2026. According to the Lebanese health ministry, at least 182 people were killed and hundreds wounded after Israel conducted its largest coordinated strike on Lebanon since the start of the war, targeting more than 100 sites in 10 minutes.

The stability of the truce has faced immediate challenges. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz stopped following what it described as an Israeli ceasefire violation in Lebanon. The White House has maintained that the ceasefire will continue as long as the strait remains open.

Diplomatic and Economic Impact

Further negotiations are scheduled to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan, beginning Saturday, April 12, 2026. The U.S. Delegation will include Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner.

The announcement initially caused significant movement in global markets. On April 8, 2026, U.S. Crude prices plunged 16.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded its best day in a year. However, some of these gains were reversed on Thursday, April 9, 2026, as uncertainty grew over the transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Asian markets saw declines on April 9, 2026, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index and China’s Shanghai Composite both opening down 0.6%, and South Korea’s Kospi falling 1.11%. Oil prices rose slightly on Thursday, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures increasing 2.6% to $96.89 a barrel and Brent crude rising 2.1% to $96.75 a barrel.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that President Trump chose mercy with the decision to implement the ceasefire, pulling back from previous threats to destroy the Iranian civilization.
