A strategic divide has emerged between the United States and Israel regarding the objectives and conclusion of the ongoing military campaign against Iran. While the Trump administration has signaled a push to end the conflict, Israel continues to pursue regime change in Tehran, creating a rift in war alignment as Iran escalates its disruption of global shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US-Israeli military campaign against Iran began on March 10, 2026. By March 22, 2026, Tehran began deploying what has been described as its most powerful strategic card: the disruption of international shipping within the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

Iranian Maritime Escalation

Iranian forces have targeted both Western and regional vessels using a combination of aerial and maritime suicide drones. These attacks are designed to threaten the flow of energy and international trade through the Strait of Hormuz.

The impact of these disruptions has already been felt in global shipping. For example, the Liberia-flagged tanker Shenlong Suezmax, carrying Saudi Arabian crude, arrived at a port in Mumbai, India, on March 12, after transiting the Strait amid ongoing supply disruptions.

Divergent War Objectives

Despite the joint military pressure placed on Iran, the Trump administration and the Israeli government hold conflicting views on the war’s end state. Reporting from The Hill indicates that President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring the conflict to a close conflict with Israel’s desire for regime change in Iran.

President Trump has asserted absolute authority over the timing and termination of the military operations. He stated that Israel will do what I tell them regarding the end of the war and will stop when I stop.

The Atlantic Council has noted that the path the United States chooses for the forward movement on Iran will ultimately determine the level of alignment between the US and Israel during the conflict.

Political and Economic Constraints

The trajectory of the war is being shaped by more than just military objectives. According to The Jerusalem Post, domestic politics and regional dynamics are creating political limits on how the conflict unfolds and how it will eventually conclude.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been a key figure in the administration’s approach as the White House manages the military pressure on Iran alongside these political constraints.

The instability caused by the conflict has also created significant tension in global financial markets. Bloomberg reports that Wall Street is currently waiting for a clear sign that the war is ending before adjusting market expectations.

As of April 3, 2026, the conflict remains defined by this tension between the US desire for a political exit and the Israeli pursuit of a fundamental change in the Iranian government, all while Iran continues to utilize its maritime capabilities to pressure the international community.
