US Arms Embargo on Taiwan: China Issues Stern Warning Amid Rising Tensions
China Condemns US Arms Sale to Taiwan, Citing Threat to Peace and Stability
China has urged the United States to immediately halt its arms sales to Taiwan, citing the move as a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese Foreign Ministry made the statement after the US Department of Defense announced the approval of a $1.988 billion arms sale to Taipei, which includes advanced surface-to-air missile systems and radar systems.
The sale of US arms to Taiwan is seen as a violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US Joint Communiqués, particularly the Communiqué of August 17, 1982. China views the move as a serious infringement on its sovereignty and security interests, which could impact China-US relations and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Furthermore, the sale is perceived as sending the wrong message to Taiwan’s pro-independence separatist forces.
China has strongly condemned the arms sale and has taken firm steps in response. The Chinese government believes that Washington’s decision to use Taiwan to coerce China and support pro-independence actions with arms is contrary to the commitments made by US leaders not to support the island’s independence. This move also undermines the efforts made by both sides to stabilize China-US relations.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated that China will respond decisively and take all necessary measures to protect its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
