US Bases in the UK Monitor Drone Intrusions Amid Thanksgiving Airspace Restrictions

US Bases in the UK Monitor Drone Intrusions Amid Thanksgiving Airspace Restrictions

December 1, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

U.S. Bases in the UK Monitoring Drone Activity

Overview
On November 26, 2024, the UK issued a Notice to Aviation (NOTAM) allowing military aircraft at RAF Lakenheath to operate without lights in a 20 nautical mile radius. This measure is in place until December 4, 2024. Despite the Thanksgiving holiday, F-15E Strike Eagles from Lakenheath conducted flights on November 27, 28, and 29.

Military Assets
RAF Fylingdales operates an advanced radar system for space surveillance and missile warning. This site shares data with the U.S. and is part of a missile detection network alongside other bases in North America and Greenland. RAF Menwith Hill hosts personnel from the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). This base conducts intelligence operations and satellite communication.

Drone Monitoring
There is ongoing monitoring of drones near U.S. installations. Reports suggest these drones are more sophisticated than typical hobbyist models. On November 29, F-15E Strike Eagles flew into the Vale of York, indicating involvement in counter-drone operations.

Additional Military Activity
RAF Shadow intelligence aircraft continue to observe drone activity. Reports of drones have emerged near RAF Marham, which is home to UK F-35B aircraft. The situation has sparked increased communications, some encrypted to ensure security.

Government Response
Maria Eagle, Minister of State for Defence Procurement and Industry, assured Parliament that personnel and base protection is a priority and that multiple security measures are in place.

Public Sightings and Misidentifications
Many drone sightings reported online are likely misinterpretations of normal aircraft or phenomena like satellites. Some reports link sightings to UFOs, but these claims often lack evidence. The U.S. Department of Defense refers to unidentified objects as "unidentified aerial phenomena" (UAP).

Conclusion
U.S. bases in the UK maintain vigilance against potential drone threats while continuing normal operations. Public interest and reports of unusual sightings contribute to the ongoing conversation about airspace security.
