Canada has pledged to respond “dollar for dollar” to sweeping tariffs announced by the United States, publishing a list of more than 700 American goods slated for higher taxes beginning Sept. 8, according to reporting. The retaliatory duties will range from 15% to 50% and target high-profile imports including steel, aluminum, fish, cheese, smartphones, and household appliances, deepening an escalating trade war between the two North American neighbors.

Canada Pledges Dollar-for-Dollar Retaliation

The tit-for-tat measures follow the implementation of 50% U.S. tariffs on approximately 20.000 millones de dólares worth of Canadian products, enacted under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930—an inactive Depression-era law utilized by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The targeted Canadian goods span honey, hockey sticks, alcoholic beverages, and consumer electronics, representing about 5% of the total value of goods shipped to the U.S. last year.

Targeting Key U.S. Sectors and Metal Products

Ottawa’s response focuses directly on sectors most affected by Washington’s duties, applying graduated tariffs designed to match U.S. rates.

Canadian officials outlined taxes covering live and frozen fish, dairy items, natural honey, cosmetics, floor coverings, paper products, apparel, and major home appliances. The largest share of the new Canadian measures hits metal products, including steel and aluminum wire, pipes, and sheets, which already face sectoral duties in the U.S. market.

Diplomatic Fallout and Leaked Audio

The mounting economic friction coincides with strained diplomatic channels following leaked audio from a private fundraising event.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance described Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a leader who enters negotiations wanting to appear tougher than Donald Trump before ultimately yielding. While Canadian diplomats packed their bags and cut short trade talks over the weekend, Carney announced the formal end of negotiations on a new trade framework, injecting fresh hostility into a bilateral relationship encompassing over US$872.000 millones in annual trade.

National Security and Economic Policy Clashes

According to Drew DeLong, head of corporate political strategy at Kearney Foresight, federal agencies in Washington operate under the guiding principle that economic security equates directly to national security.

Consequently, neighboring allies like Canada and Mexico became targets under the Trump administration’s broader trade agenda, driven by grievances over regional defense spending and trade imbalances.

Supply Chains Brace for September Confrontation

With diplomatic talks suspended and retaliatory tariffs set to activate across both borders in September, businesses and households on both sides are bracing for immediate price increases.
